The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, on Thursday presented cheques totalling N52.9 million to the families of 10 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Giwa said the presentation was made on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as part of activities marking the National Police Day 2026 celebration, themed “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”
Speaking during the event in Enugu, the commissioner described the gesture as a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of families of fallen officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
“I am making this presentation on behalf of the IG, Mr Olatunji Disu, and urge you to make judicious use of the money by investing it in genuine and profitable ventures,” he said.
He advised the beneficiaries to exercise caution in managing the funds, warning them against falling victim to fraudulent schemes or deceptive investment offers.
“Please, be wary of close friends and family members who may attempt to lure you into fraudulent or unrealistic investment opportunities. Invest wisely and, if possible, take time to reflect and seek guidance before making decisions, as this support may not come again,” he added.
Giwa further reminded the families of their responsibilities, particularly in catering to dependants, including educational and household needs.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Regent of Oboji Enugwo Autonomous Community, Rev. Charles Ugwuagu, expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police and the Enugu State command for the support.
Ugwuagu, whose brother was among the deceased officers, commended the police for remembering the families and ensuring that the gesture was carried out with diligence.
“We thank the Inspector-General, the commissioner, and the entire command for this kind gesture and the effort that made it possible,” he said.
The presentation formed part of ongoing activities for the National Police Day 2026 celebration, which began earlier in the week with events including environmental sanitation, health outreach, and community engagement programmes.
Other activities included a walkathon and public sensitisation sessions on electoral violence prevention and road safety.
The week-long celebration is expected to conclude on April 7 at the Eagle Square in Abuja, with a grand finale featuring a ceremonial parade and procession.
