In an extraordinary show of political solidarity, Nigeria’s Labour Party has paid glowing tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his democratic credentials and describing him as a leader who “set a standard for future leaders.”
The opposition party’s unusually warm eulogy came in an official statement mourning Buhari’s passing on 13th July 2025.
“The Labour Party of Nigeria joins the nation in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who departed this life on 13th July 2025. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians grieving this monumental loss,” the party stated.
The tribute highlighted Buhari’s unique approach to opposition politics, noting that “as an opposition party, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, particularly noted and appreciates President Buhari’s respect for political pluralityn
“Throughout his tenure, he upheld the principles of fair play, refusing to interfere in opposition politics or manipulate state institutions for partisan gain. This dignified approach to governance strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and set a standard for future leaders.”
Labour Party’s statement painted a portrait of Buhari as a leader of uncommon integrity, stating “President Buhari was a patriot who served Nigeria with sincerity, first as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president. His life was defined by discipline, integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s unity. We acknowledge his contributions to national stability, his fight against corruption, and his commitment to democratic values.”
In a spiritual appeal that reflected Nigeria’s multi-faith character, the opposition party offered prayers for the late statesman: “In this moment of grief, we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul. May Almighty Allah grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings.
We also ask for divine comfort for his beloved wife, Aisha Buhari, his children, and the entire Buhari family, as well as his political associates and admirers nationwide.”
The tribute emphasised the enduring nature of Buhari’s legacy, noting that “President Buhari’s legacy, rooted in service, simplicity, and resilience, will endure in our national consciousness.”
The Labour Party leadership called on Nigerians to honour this legacy through unity and progressive values, stating “The Labour Party National Working Committee ably led by Julius Abure and Alh Farouk Umar Ibrahim encourages all Nigerians to honour his memory by upholding the values of selflessness, accountability, and unity that he championed.”
Concluding with a forward looking appeal, the party urged collective reflection, saying “As a nation, let us reflect on his life and rededicate ourselves to building a Nigeria that thrives in peace, justice, and equitable progress.”
