Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident that occurred on the Nafada River, claiming the lives of five teenagers.
The victims of the unfortunate incident, which happened on Saturday, have been identified as Najib Ibrahim (18), Hauwa’u Jidda Adamu Siddi Dogal (15), Ummati Haruna Baraya (16), Umaira Gidado (16), and Amina Jaliya (15).
In a statement, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the Director-General (Press Affairs), Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as heartbreaking and painful, particularly because of the young ages of the victims and the devastation it brought to their families and the Nafada community.
“This is a deeply tragic event that has cut short the lives of promising young individuals. My heart goes out to their parents, families, and the entire Nafada community. The loss of these young souls is a collective tragedy for us all,” the Governor said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear the loss.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya also emphasized the need for strict compliance with safety standards in water transportation, calling on local authorities, community leaders, and boat operators to intensify enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Nafada Local Government Council to provide immediate support to the affected families and to work closely with relevant agencies to enhance public awareness and safety in riverine communities.
“On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased. May Allah forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” the Governor prayed.
