“Defection rumour a speculation from the imagination of wishful thinkers; my loyalty to the APC sacrosanct.”
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has vehemently denied a viral social media report claiming he and five other northern governors were planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He Described the report as “fictitious and mischievous,”, saying it was the handiwork of political detractors.
He issued the denial after this media outlet reported on Saturday that he was leading a group of northern governors to the ADC.
It would be recalled that on May 15, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum led a protest after APC leaders endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election without including Vice President Kashim Shettima in the decision.
During a North-East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and National Vice Chairman (North-East) Comrade Mustapha Salihu publicly backed Tinubu for a second term but made no mention of Shettima.
The situation escalated when angry delegates protested the omission, forcing Ganduje and Salihu to leave the venue under tight security.
This incident has fueled suspicions that certain factions within the party may be working against President Tinubuโs re-election bid.
However, the Borno State Governor has said: “I have become aware of a fictitious and mischievous social media report circulating in certain quarters, alleging that I plan to decamp from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside five other governors,” Zulum stated. “This is entirely false and exists only in the imagination of its sponsors.”
The governor accused the rumour-mongers of being “detractors who have made no meaningful contribution to the progress of Borno State or Nigeria,” adding that the speculation was “a classic example of cheap, politically motivated distraction.” He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the APC, stressing that his focus remains on governance, not political theatrics.
“My loyalty to the APC remains firm, and my dedication is solely to the welfare and progress of Borno State,” Zulum declared. “I urge the good people of Borno and the general public to disregard this fabrication. We have no time for cheap politics; our hands are full with the noble task of rebuilding and developing our dear state.”
The governor called on media outlets and the public to verify news from credible sources, warning against the dangers of disinformation. “We remain resolute in our commitment to serving Borno State under the banner of our great party, the APC,” he concluded.
