New operational data released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has revealed a significant upswing in the country’s gas sector, with both production and sales reaching their highest levels so far this year.
The figures, detailed in the company’s Monthly Report Summary for July 2025, highlight a period of strong performance for this critical segment of the economy.
According to the report, natural gas production averaged 7.72 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscf/d) in July. This represents the highest output recorded in 2025, showing a notable recovery from the low of 6.615 bscf/d seen in February. In a corresponding rise, gas sales also climbed impressively, reaching 4.978 bscf/d during the same period. This is an increase from 4.74 bscf/d in June and a significant jump from the lowest point of 3.545 bscf/d recorded earlier in the year.
The report directly linked this positive performance to “progress on critical infrastructure projects,” specifically naming the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline. It was noted that these strategic efforts are part of a broader focus on “sustained crude oil and condensate production, improved uptime of production facilities and continued stakeholders’ collaboration and operational efficiency.”
Providing an update on the OB3 pipeline, the NNPC stated that a 113km portion “has been commissioned and flowing about 300mmscf/d of gas.” This gas is being supplied from several producers, including “AHL 250 mmscf/d as well as Platform, Chorus and Xenergi – 50 mmscf/d.” Furthermore, the company confirmed it has “commenced implementation of revised execution strategy towards expedited completion of OB3 River Niger Crossing.”
On the AKK pipeline project, the national oil company reported that “additional subcontractors have been deployed to expedite completion of mainline works and fast track project completion.”
While the gas sector showed robust growth, the report also provided broader financial context. The NNPC disclosed that its total revenue for July was N4.4 trillion, with a Profit After Tax (PAT) of N185 billion. This profit figure represents a sharp decline from the N905 billion recorded in June. Despite this monthly volatility, the company’s statutory remittances to the Federation Account from January to June reached a substantial N7.965 trillion.
The data confirms that Nigeria’s focus on expanding its gas infrastructure is yielding tangible results, positioning the commodity as an increasingly vital component of the nation’s energy portfolio and economic planning.
