Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly pledged to secure the state for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The governor made the declaration on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, shortly after formally receiving his membership card of the All Progressives Congress from the State APC Chairman, Tony Okocha.
Fubara, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, declared himself the leader of the APC in the state and vowed to ensure the party’s dominance.
“I am the number one. I have collected my card and the number is 001. The message is clear,” Fubara stated. “We’re going to do everything to make sure that the 2027 election for the president will be a smooth ride in Rivers State.”
He framed his defection as a “spiritual assignment” for the state’s safety and progress, and as a reciprocal gesture for President Tinubu’s role in resolving the state’s political crisis earlier in the year.
“I took this decision as my own return of favour—clearing the bush to ensure that his re-election in 2027 will be easy and smooth in this state,” he explained.
The governor also committed to bankrolling the party’s activities, stating, “It is my responsibility… to ensure that the party is properly taken care of. I assure you that every need of the executive, every need of the party in this state, becomes my responsibility.”
His defection follows that of 17 state lawmakers, effectively consolidating the APC’s control in Rivers and across the entire South-South region.
Speaking at a separate event to flag off a road project, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, hailed Fubara’s move, describing the governor as “an elephant and the latest catch” for the ruling party.
