Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that peace has been restored between him and his political benefactor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The governor made the announcement on Monday following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists after the courtesy visit, Fubara stated that the prolonged political feud that had crippled the stateโs governance was now over. โAs far as Iโm concerned, we have made peace. Fubara and his principal are working together,โ he said, explicitly referring to Wike.
The governorโs declaration signals a definitive end to a months-long crisis that became so severe it prompted President Tinubu to declare a six-month emergency rule in March, which led to the suspension of Fubara and other state officials. The President lifted the emergency rule on September 17, restoring the governor and other offices.
Fubara described his meeting with Tinubu as a โfather-son discussion,โ explaining that it was proper to inform the President of his full return to duty. โIโve also resumed my responsibility as the governor of Rivers State,โ he said, adding that the purpose was to thank Tinubu and seek guidance โso we donโt get in any situation of crisis again.โ
The truce comes after the Supreme Court had previously noted the collapse of governance in the oil-rich state due to the political impasse.
In a related development, Governor Fubara later met with the Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), where he shifted focus to economic issues. He lamented the underutilisation of the Port Harcourt and Onne seaports, stating that optimising their capacity would drive employment, attract industries, and transform the state’s economy. He pledged his administrationโs support to the NPA, linking economic revival to sustained peace and security.
