The National Identity Management Commission says it will commence nationwide ward-level enrolment for the National Identification Number on Monday, February 16, 2026, in line with a presidential directive mandating the commission to take registration services to the grassroots.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the exercise aims to achieve comprehensive registration of all Nigerian citizens and legal residents—including children and adults—into the National Identity Database.
The enrolment will be conducted free of charge, the commission emphasised, describing it as part of President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda to promote inclusive governance, national development, and access to identity services.
According to NIMC, the ward-level initiative represents a strategic step towards decentralising identity services and reducing the burden on citizens who previously travelled long distances to enrol at designated centres.
“The ward-level enrolment initiative represents a strategic step towards deepening identity inclusion, decentralising services, and bringing registration to the ward level, thereby improving accessibility, reducing travel burden, and promoting nationwide participation,” the statement read.
The commission said it has commenced consultations and sensitisation campaigns across different tiers of government and community structures to ensure a seamless rollout.
State governments, local government chairpersons, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, and faith-based organisations are being engaged to guarantee smooth implementation across wards.
NIMC urged Nigerians and legal residents yet to obtain their NIN to take advantage of the opportunity and mobilise their families and communities for the exercise.
Enrolment schedules guiding the rotational movement of licensed front-end partners and their staff will be published on the commission’s website.
