The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has conducted a major security operation in Abuja’s Wuse Zone 3, dismantling illegal shanties and impounding 20 vehicles used for criminal activities, including notorious “one-chance” robberies.
The early morning raid on Wednesday saw taskforce officials, led by Director of Development Control Muktar Galadima, recover dangerous weapons including machetes from what authorities described as a “security threat zone”.
The operation followed Tuesday’s directive by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for intensified efforts to rid the capital of criminal elements.
“We identified a location posing significant security challenges and aesthetic concerns for the city,” Galadima told journalists. “We’ve cleared the menace and dispersed questionable characters. This area is designated for the Inner Northern Expressway development – their occupation was illegal.”
Security officials displayed recovered weapons, with Department of Security Services director Adamu Gwary stating: “These machetes were used to attack passers-by near National Mosque and Zone 1 bridges. Multiple police reports confirm this pattern.” Gwary’s representative, Dr Peter Olumuji, emphasised the site’s role as a criminals’ hideout.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) confirmed impounding vehicles, some linked to “one-chance” robberies – a scheme where criminals pose as taxi drivers to rob passengers. “Owners will face heavy fines after proper documentation,” said VIO’s Head of Operations Deborah Osho.
Authorities warned of Thursday’s mop-up operation, urging property owners to comply with development regulations or face revocation. The FCTA maintains the clearance aligns with Abuja’s masterplan, removing obstructions from designated road corridors.
The operation comes amid growing security concerns in the capital, with officials vowing sustained efforts against criminal hotspots.
All impounded vehicles and weapons remain in government custody as investigations continue.
