Muyiwa Adekeye, the media adviser to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has alleged that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) denied his detained boss access to medical treatment.
He also raised alarm that the former governor has developed swollen red and itchy eyes.
In a statement on Friday, Muyiwa Adekeye alleged that El-Rufai’s requests to see a doctor were ignored despite complaints of swollen, red and itchy eyes.
Adekeye confirmed that the former governor’s condition worsened after he was taken to an eye clinic on June 4, prompting concern from family members who visited him in custody.
He affirmed that ICPC officials acknowledged El-Rufai’s condition but failed to arrange medical attention. Adekeye further alleged that an official identified as Henry wrongly informed family members that El-Rufai had declined medical treatment.
Also, Adekeye accused the commission of disregarding a court order obtained by El-Rufai’s lawyers to facilitate access to his doctors, arguing that no government agency should deny medical care to anyone in custody.
He added that the family had previously raised similar concerns, alleging that ICPC officials prevented El-Rufai’s personal physician from seeing him and also turned away his wife, Aichatou El-Rufai, when she attempted to deliver food to him.
However, the family of the detained former governor said the actions amount to violations of El-Rufai”s fundamental rights as court has granted him access to medical care.
Earlier, the ICPC had denied allegations that it was preventing the former governor from receiving medical attention or food deliveries while in custody.
