The Edo State Government has activated emergency measures to contain a recent diphtheria outbreak, with Governor Monday Okpebholo leading a coordinated health response.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the government assured residents that all necessary protocols were being enforced to curb the spread of the disease. “We have deployed critical resources, including vaccines, and are working closely with health experts to protect our communities,” the statement read.
Governor Okpebholo is personally overseeing containment efforts, collaborating with the State Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and international partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO). A statewide vaccination campaign is underway, prioritising children and high-risk groups.
Hospitals have been placed on high alert, with medical teams trained to identify, isolate, and manage suspected cases. The government has also launched public awareness campaigns across traditional and digital media to educate citizens on symptomsโincluding sore throat, fever, and breathing difficultiesโand preventive measures.
Commissioner for Health Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole is leading an emergency task force, while schools, traditional rulers, and community leaders have been mobilised to support early detection and hygiene enforcement.
Governor Okpebholo urged calm but vigilance: “Report symptoms immediately and participate in vaccination drives. Edo State has a proven capacity to manage health emergencies, and we are committed to safeguarding every resident.”
The government emphasised that the situation is under control and thanked partners for their swift collaboration in the containment effort.
