The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a sharp rise in diesel prices, with consumers paying an average of N1,758.26 per litre in May 2025 – a 25.24% increase from N1,403.96 in May 2024.
This continues an upward trend, showing a 2.08% month-on-month rise from April’s N1,722.45.
Regional disparities remain stark, with Benue State recording the highest price at N2,441.46 per litre, followed by Adamawa (N2,350.32) and Plateau (N2,201.52).
In contrast, Ondo State maintained the lowest price at N1,318.40, with Kogi (N1,360) and Anambra (N1,361.02) close behind.
Zonal data revealed the North Central as the most expensive region at N1,920.47 per litre, while the South West remained most affordable at N1,553.19.
These sustained price increases continue to burden businesses and households across Nigeria, particularly those relying on diesel for power generation amid the nation’s ongoing electricity challenges.
