Delta State University in Abraka has expelled a student for four semesters after she filmed a dying colleague at the university’s health centre and shared the video on the social media platform TikTok.
The university management took the action against Ezi Ugoma, a 200-level Microbiology student, for what it termed “gross misconduct” and a “breach of the university’s matriculation oath.”
The expulsion was confirmed in an official letter dated October 21, 2025, which detailed that Ugoma had appeared before the institution’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee over the incident. The committee held sittings on August 21, 22, and 25 to consider the case.
The letter, signed by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Ughwumiakpor A., stated that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel O. Asagba, approved the committee’s recommendation. Consequently, Ugoma is rusticated for four semesters, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session. She will not be permitted to resume her studies until the 2027/2028 session.
The decision has sparked public debate, drawing criticism from media personality Rufai Oseni. The Arise TV presenter described the punishment as “unjustifiable” and made a public appeal to the Vice-Chancellor on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
In his post, Oseni contested the university’s characterization of the event. He claimed the video in question was about “girls not getting involved in abortions,” as stated in the student’s caption, and appealed for the decision to be reversed to prevent the young woman’s future from being “shattered and cut short.”
Oseni further alleged that the situation had severe personal consequences for the student, reporting that her stepfather had “vehemently told her to kiss her education goodbye forever, and that she should prepare to go back to the village.” He urged the university authorities not to “allow this injustice to stand.”
