Nigeria’s top military brass took coordinated action this week to address the nation’s pressing security challenges, with the Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) leading separate but complementary initiatives focused on protecting critical oil infrastructure and strengthening regional security partnerships .
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Headquarters of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Bori Camp, Port Harcourt, where he called for a unified strategy to safeguard the nation’s oil and gas assets . During the engagement, which brought together security agencies, industry operators, and community representatives, the Minister identified vandalism, crude oil theft, sabotage, and ageing infrastructure as persistent threats to critical national assets .
Musa warned that emerging security challenges, including the use of explosives in pipeline attacks, demand a more proactive and coordinated response . “Effective protection of strategic national assets will depend on sustained collaboration, enhanced intelligence sharing and the deployment of modern surveillance technologies to tackle evolving security threats,” he stated .
The meeting resolved to strengthen an intelligence-driven, technology-enabled security framework while sustaining engagement with host communities to foster trust and promote long-term stability in the Niger Delta region .
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, led Nigeria’s delegation to the 2026 African Chiefs of Defence Conference (ACHOD) held in Luanda, Angola, from June 30 to July 2 .
The conference, hosted by the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) in collaboration with the Angolan Armed Forces, brought together senior military leaders from across Africa and international partners to deliberate on shared security threats and regional stability .
Delivering Nigeria’s intervention, Oluyede stressed the need for Africa to “build a resilient and adaptive security architecture capable of responding to current and emerging threats to secure Africa’s future” . He underscored the importance of strengthening regional intelligence, revitalising security systems, enhancing integrated border management, and investing in strategic defence partnerships .
The CDS also commended the bilateral defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against terrorism, noting it has significantly enhanced the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria .
On the sidelines of the conference, he held bilateral engagements with fellow Chiefs of Defence and key international partners to strengthen cooperation against threats that “do not respect borders” .
Separately, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, inaugurated several infrastructural projects at the Headquarters, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army’s 163rd anniversary celebration .
The projects include a Command and Administrative Centre, a detention facility, 12 units of senior and junior officers’ accommodation, and a Soldiers’ Club .
Shaibu explained that the projects were aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, improving personnel welfare, and reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s soldier-first culture .
“These projects are meant to add value to the formation hosting the celebration and, more importantly, to positively impact our soldiers and their families,” he said .
The COAS commended the General Officer Commanding 6 Division and Land Component Commander, Operation Delta Safe, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, for his leadership and commitment to infrastructure development within the division . The grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration will hold on Monday, July 6 .
The coordinated actions by Nigeria’s defence leadership underscore the federal government’s commitment to protecting critical national assets and personnel welfare while strengthening regional and international security cooperation .
