In a move set to significantly reshape the Nigerian fuel market, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced the commencement of direct supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to filling stations across several states. The product will be supplied from its gantry at a landmark price of N820 per litre, with the crucial added benefit of free delivery.
The initiative, effective Monday, September 15, 2025, will begin its initial phase in ten states, with a clear promise to expand operations nationwide. The refinery published a detailed price list outlining the expected retail pump price for each of the launch states, factoring in logistics.
According to the announcement, the gantry price for all registered station owners is uniform. The resulting pump price for consumers, however, varies slightly by region:
· Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti: N841 per litre
· Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, Kwara: N851 per litre
The company explicitly stated, “We are starting with the above-named States and subsequently expand our operations into other States.”
In a direct appeal to petroleum marketers, the management of the multi-billion dollar facility invited all petrol station owners nationwide to register for the programme to benefit from the free delivery and other unspecified advantages.
This strategic decision to bypass traditional depot channels and sell directly to retailers is anticipated to inject greater competition into the downstream sector. By offering a significantly lower gantry price and absorbing delivery costs, the Dangote Refinery could force a downward adjustment in the nationwide pump price, offering potential relief to consumers and businesses long burdened by high fuel costs.
The move also marks a critical step towards achieving Nigeria’s long-held goal of energy independence and price stability, leveraging the massive output of the world’s largest single-train refinery to meet domestic demand directly. Industry analysts will be watching closely to see how existing major marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) respond to this new competitive pressure.
