The Chairman of Dangote Industries, Aliko Dangote, has formally petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate and prosecute the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, for alleged abuse of office and corrupt enrichment.
The petition was filed on Friday by Dangoteโs lead counsel, Dr. O.J. Onoja, at the EFCC headquarters. This move comes just days after Dangote withdrew a similar petition against Ahmed from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The Dangote Group, in a statement, described the switch to the EFCC as a “strategic decision aimed at accelerating the prosecution process.”
The petition urges the EFCC, under the leadership of Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, to probe serious allegations of financial misconduct and impunity leveled against the former regulator.
“We make bold to state that the commission is strategically positionedโฆ to prosecute financial crimes and corruption-related offences,” the petition stated, citing relevant legal precedents to bolster its request for a swift and decisive investigation.
This development follows earlier allegations by Dangote that Ahmed spent an estimated $5 million on his childrenโs secondary education in Switzerlandโa petition the ICPC has vowed to continue investigating despite its withdrawal. In the new filing with the EFCC, Dangote’s legal team has pledged to provide concrete evidence to substantiate the claims of abuse and illicit enrichment.
