A fresh crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the indefinite suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory in the National Assembly.
The Wuse Ward of the party in Abuja announced the suspension on Monday, citing allegations of anti-party activities, insubordination, and a breach of party rules. The decision was reached during a stakeholdersโ meeting attended by ward executives and members.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Ward Chairman, Kanayo Chukwu, said the suspension followed a general meeting held on March 10, 2026, where members deliberated on a series of allegations leveled against the senator.
According to Chukwu, over 2,000 participants at the meeting considered accusations ranging from the alleged confiscation of the ward register and the operation of a parallel registration process to persistent absenteeism from ward meetings, non-payment of statutory dues, and acts of insubordination toward party leadership.
He stated that after reviewing the allegations, a motion for the immediate suspension of Senator Kingibe was moved by the general house and subsequently ratified by a two-thirds majority of executives present.
โAfter due consideration of the above grave offences, a motion was moved by the general house for the immediate suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, and it was ratified by a two-thirds majority of the executives present,โ Chukwu said.
He added that the resolution had been formally forwarded to the Abuja Municipal Area Council chairman of the party, Omale Sule, for further ratification in line with the partyโs constitutional provisions.
Confirming receipt of the resolution, Sule said the matter would be subjected to the appropriate internal processes before any final decision is taken.
โAs the party chairman at the local government level, I must wait for the official submission. Once received, it will be forwarded to the state chairman for further action,โ he said.
Similarly, the Federal Capital Territory chairman of the ADC, Clement Ehijiator, disclosed that the development emerged during a meeting initially convened to discuss membership registration and other party matters in the territory.
Ehijiator said the party leadership had received the wardโs report and would review the allegations in accordance with the partyโs constitution before transmitting its findings to the national leadership.
โAs the constitutional chairman of the party in the FCT, I have received the report. We will examine the allegations and take appropriate steps in line with the partyโs constitution before forwarding it to the national leadership,โ he said.
Meanwhile, party members at the meeting passed a vote of confidence in Ehijiator, commending his leadership of the party in the Federal Capital Territory.
