The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation and vowed to take action following what it describes as “unacceptable behaviour” by players and officials during the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations final on Saturday night.
The governing body issued a strong statement on Monday condemning incidents that marred the climactic match between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
While the statement did not specify the nature of the misconduct, it emphasised that such actions, particularly those targeting match officials and organisers, are intolerable.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” the statement read.
The controversy comes on the heels of a tense tournament. CAF confirmed it is “reviewing all footage” from the final and will refer the matter to its disciplinary bodies. “Appropriate action,” including potential sanctions, will be taken against any individuals found guilty.
This final incident expands an existing disciplinary crackdown. Last week, CAF opened a separate investigation into match incidents during the quarter-final fixtures between Cameroon and Morocco, and Algeria and Nigeria, citing similar concerns over player and official conduct.
The organization has stated it is collecting match reports and video evidence to ensure a thorough review process.
Further details regarding specific incidents or potential suspensions are expected to be released following the conclusion of the disciplinary proceedings.
