President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled participation in two major international summits to address a surge in domestic security breaches, ordering an immediate reinforcement of security personnel in Kwara State and a full-scale effort to rescue kidnapped schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
The President was scheduled to depart Abuja on Monday for Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend the 20th G20 Summit, and was then to proceed to Luanda, Angola, for the 7th AU-EU Summit.
However, the twin security crises—the abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and a deadly bandit attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State—prompted a change of plans.
In a swift response, President Tinubu has directed the military and police to deploy more men and assets to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
He has also issued a direct order for security agencies to apprehend the bandits responsible for the church attack.
“The President is deeply disturbed by these security breaches and has chosen to remain in the country to oversee the response personally,” a statement from the State House read.
The decision underscores the administration’s public commitment to prioritizing national security.
President Tinubu is now awaiting critical briefings to guide further action. This includes a report from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who paid a sympathy visit to Kebbi on the President’s behalf, as well as comprehensive updates from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the Kwara attack.
Reiterating his earlier directive, the President commanded the security agencies to “do everything possible to rescue the 24 schoolgirls… and bring the girls back home, safe.”
