The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system.
The newly introduced Tax ID will replace the old Tax Identification Number (TIN) as part of sweeping reforms to strengthen tax administration and curb revenue leakages.
The new innovation, under Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, the new Tax ID, mandates every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain the single identifier.
The initiative is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and enhance transparency across federal and sub-national tax authorities.
Key benefits of the new Tax ID
According to a statement jointly signed by the management of NRS and JRB, the Tax ID system offers several advantages over the old TIN framework:
· Single Tax Identity: One unified ID for all tax transactions and engagements
· Simplified Compliance: Easier processes for registration, filing, and payment of taxes
· Improved Transparency: Better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records
· Enhanced Revenue Assurance: Reduction in tax leakages and improved accountability
· Data Harmonization: Alignment of taxpayer information across all tiers of government
The NRS and JRB notified all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organizations currently utilizing the TIN Validation API that the new Tax ID system will officially replace the existing infrastructure.
Organizations requiring integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names are advised to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB at smd@jrb.gov.ng.
For corporate entities, integration or validation services are to be directed to the Tax Automation Department of the NRS at tax.automation@nrs.gov.ng for access to the new Tax ID API and related integration guidelines.
A new era for tax administration
The Tax ID initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the federal government to modernize Nigeria’s tax system, improve service delivery, and broaden the tax net.
By creating a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, authorities aim to streamline interactions between taxpayers and revenue agencies while reducing the administrative burden of maintaining multiple identifiers across different jurisdictions.
As Nigeria continues to face fiscal pressures, the successful implementation of the Tax ID system is expected to plug existing loopholes and enhance revenue assurance at both federal and state levels.
Further guidelines and a public sensitization campaign are expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
