A source monitoring the situation confirmed that the victim succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night while receiving treatment in Kaduna.
“Yes, I can confirm to you that one of the survivors passed on last night in Kaduna. We are waiting for the corpse to arrive here in Kachia,” the source said. “We do not wish to release the name until they arrive.”
The latest death raises the official toll from the Wake village attack to nine. So far, the Kaduna State Government has not issued any statement acknowledging Sunday’s assault or the wider surge of violence across the region.
The silence contrasts sharply with Governor Uba Sani’s appearance on a live television programme Sunday night, where he insisted that insecurity in areas such as Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Kachia, Zango Kataf, Kauru, and Igabi had been “largely addressed,” enabling residents to return to their farms. Notably, the governor made no reference to the recent killings in Kauru and Kachia local government areas, nor to a string of kidnappings and attacks in Kubau, Makarfi, and Kudan councils previously considered relatively secure.
The gap between official assurances and the reality on the ground has drawn criticism from residents and community leaders, who are demanding stronger security measures and greater transparency in government responses to the violence.
On Sunday, it was reported by Sahara Reporters that at least eight people had been confirmed dead and 18 others injured following a deadly attack by armed bandits on Wake village in the Kachia Local Government Area of the state.
The assault, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, also saw an unconfirmed number of residents abducted by the assailants.
The attackers, who stormed the community in Agunu Ward in large numbers, launched a coordinated assault that left the village in chaos. Local sources said the bandits moved swiftly, shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee, before taking captives whose whereabouts remain unknown.
“I can confirm that bandits killed eight of our people in Wake village, injured about 18, and kidnapped several others,” a local source reported.
The injured victims were rushed to medical facilities, with some receiving treatment in Kachia town while those in critical condition were transferred to hospitals in Kaduna.
