In a major political realignment, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and sixteen other members have officially defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their decision during a plenary session on Friday. Speaker Amaewhule cited a “clear division” within the PDP at the national level as the primary reason for their move.
This mass defection is expected to significantly alter the political balance of power in the state assembly. With this shift, the APC now holds a commanding majority in the house, dealing a substantial blow to the PDP’s influence in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
