President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted his first list of ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation.
The announcement was made on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read a formal communication from the President.
The initial list features three nominees: Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State, and Ayodele Oke.
“The list contains three names for now, I am sure others will follow,” Akpabio stated after relaying the President’s letter, indicating that this is the first batch of a broader set of diplomatic appointments.
Spear News reports that the development marks the first ambassadorial appointments since President Tinubu assumed office in 2023, a delay that has drawn criticism from political opponents and policy analysts.
The absence of confirmed ambassadors for over two years has left many of Nigeria’s key diplomatic posts vacant, potentially hindering the nation’s foreign policy and international relations.
The appointments come at a crucial time, particularly in the context of Nigeria’s relationship with the United States.
The recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the former Trump administration had been partly attributed by some commentators to the lack of a full-fledged diplomatic corps to vigorously advocate for the country’s interests.
The Senate is expected to commence the screening and confirmation process for the nominees in the coming days.
