Directs immediate payment of all NiMET staff across the country
The Federal Government has brokered an agreement with aviation unions following an exhaustive six-hour negotiation session, bringing an end to the industrial action that had paralysed operations at major airports across the country.
The breakthrough came late Thursday after Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo (SAN) engaged in protracted talks with union leaders at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
The marathon meeting, which stretched well into the evening, successfully addressed all outstanding grievances that had prompted Wednesday’s strike action.
Aviation workers had grounded activities at key airports including Abuja, Lagos and Kano, with Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) staff staging vocal protests over unmet demands. Their grievances included non-implementation of approved wage structures, unpaid allowances, exclusion of some personnel from previous payments, and systemic neglect of staff training programmes and host of others.
A visibly relieved Keyamo confirmed to journalists that all ten points in the unions’ demands had been satisfactorily resolved.
He said, they have not only reached agreement on all issues but have already initiated processes for immediate payment of the outstanding subsistence allowances owned the workers.
The resolution comes as a relief to thousands of air travellers who had faced disruptions since the industrial action began.
Leadership of the unions thanked the Minister for his proactive moves and approach to conflict resolution.
