Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has officially announced his intention to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, marking a significant step in his political resurgence.
Bello made the declaration on Monday during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he was hosted by traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders from the senatorial district.
A video of the event, shared on the former governor’s verified Facebook page, captured the moment he told the gathering, โI accept to run for the Senate in 2027.โ
This move sets the stage for a potential high-profile contest. The Kogi Central Senatorial seat is currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to represent the district in the Senate.
The occasion had a show of political solidarity, with the current Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, present.
According to a report by Peoples Daily, Governor Ododo publicly appealed to his predecessor to yield to the calls from party leaders and constituents urging him to represent the district at the National Assembly.
Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, remains a influential figure within the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Amoka Eneji, congratulated Bello on his declaration. Eneji was quoted by Kogi Watch stating that the former governor had worked extensively for the unity and development of the Ebira people and that his leadership would remain prominent in the history of Ebiraland.
