Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Signals Defection to ADC, Set for Declaration Thursday

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has indicated that the African Democratic Congress has emerged as his preferred political destination as he considers defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, in what could become one of the most consequential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor made his position known on Tuesday while hosting a high-level delegation of the ADC at the Government House in Bauchi, in a meeting that underscores intensifying consultations among opposition figures seeking to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. The delegation was led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who is playing a prominent role in efforts to reposition the party as a viable alternative platform.

Speaking with journalists after the closed-door engagement, Mohammed pointed to the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP as a central factor driving his decision to consider leaving the party. He explained that repeated efforts to reconcile aggrieved factions within the party had failed, despite multiple interventions at different levels of leadership.

According to him, both national and state-level committees were constituted to explore possible solutions to the crisis, including consultations with other political platforms. He disclosed that these engagements extended to the All Progressives Congress, but ultimately did not yield a workable arrangement.

“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation,” the governor said, noting that the breakdown in internal cohesion within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult to sustain political stability within the party. He stressed that his actions were guided by the need to make decisions that would align with the interests of his supporters and the broader political future.

Mohammed stated that while discussions were ongoing with several political groups, the ADC had so far emerged as the most welcoming and acceptable platform. However, he cautioned that consultations were still in progress, and that no final decision had been taken at the time of the meeting.

He emphasised the importance of engaging widely with stakeholders before making a definitive move, noting that the process must be handled carefully to avoid repeating past political miscalculations. Nonetheless, he signalled that a resolution was imminent, revealing that a formal declaration regarding his political future is expected by Thursday.

The governor’s remarks suggest a carefully calibrated political transition, one that reflects both internal dissatisfaction within the PDP and a broader search for a platform capable of accommodating emerging opposition interests ahead of the next election cycle.

In addition to highlighting internal party challenges, Mohammed also alleged that external influences had contributed to deepening divisions within the PDP. He specifically accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of playing a role in exacerbating tensions within the party, an allegation that reflects ongoing rifts among key political actors.

He further revealed that he had engaged with several influential stakeholders across the political spectrum, including senior figures within the APC and President Bola Tinubu, in an attempt to find a resolution to the crisis. Despite these efforts, he said, the situation remained unresolved, reinforcing the need to consider alternative political pathways.

Earlier in the meeting, Babachir Lawal explained that the ADC delegation was in Bauchi at the instance of the party’s national leadership, under former Senate President David Mark, to formally invite Mohammed to join the party. He described the visit as part of a broader strategic effort aimed at consolidating opposition forces and building a unified front capable of challenging the ruling establishment in the 2027 elections.

Lawal emphasised that the task of repositioning Nigeria politically would require collaboration among experienced leaders and stakeholders across party lines. He noted that Mohammed’s leadership profile and political experience made him a valuable addition to the ADC’s expanding base.

He expressed confidence that the ongoing consultations would produce a positive outcome, adding that the ADC is prepared to accommodate the governor and his supporters as part of its broader national strategy. According to him, the party is witnessing growing momentum across several states, a development he said would strengthen its prospects in future electoral contests.

The unfolding development reflects a wider trend of political realignments taking shape across Nigeria as parties and key actors reposition ahead of the next general elections. Analysts say the potential defection of a sitting governor, particularly one who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, could have significant implications for opposition dynamics, party strength, and electoral calculations.

Within the PDP, the possible exit of Mohammed is likely to deepen concerns about internal stability, especially at a time when the party is grappling with leadership disputes and competing interests among its members. For the ADC, however, the development represents an opportunity to expand its influence and attract high-profile figures capable of boosting its national relevance.

As Thursday approaches, attention remains fixed on Bauchi, where the governor is expected to make a definitive statement regarding his political future. Whatever decision emerges is likely to reverberate beyond the state, shaping alliances, strategies and the broader trajectory of Nigeria’s political contest ahead of 2027.
