The Bauchi State Government has approved six months of maternity leave for nursing mothers in the state’s civil service, marking a significant step toward promoting child and maternal health as well as improving workplace conditions for women.
The State Head of Civil Service, Barrister Mohammed Umar, made the announcement while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on Tuesday at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Bauchi.
According to Barr. Umar, the new six-month maternity leave applies to all nursing mothers across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) under the Bauchi State Civil Service. The extension, he said, replaces the previous four-month period and will soon be backed by legislation from the State House of Assembly.
He added that the Council also approved the establishment of crèche centres in all government offices, allowing nursing mothers to keep their babies in safe and conducive environments while at work.
“The State Executive Council has graciously approved the extension of maternity leave from four to six months. Upon resumption, lactating mothers will also be permitted a few hours off duty daily to care for their babies,” Umar stated.
He further explained that the approval aligns with the Civil Service Regulations under Sections 1122 and 1126, and an official circular will soon be issued to formalize the policy.
The Head of Service noted that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has been directed to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure a supportive workplace environment for nursing mothers, underscoring the administration’s commitment to family welfare and public health.
