Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for securing a spot in the finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament.
In a short message shared on his verified social media handle on Sunday morning, the 2023 presidential candidate praised the team’s resilience: “We are solidly behind you and confident that, following the Super Falcons’ triumph, another laurel may soon be coming home.”
The three-time African champions defeated Senegal 75-68 in a thrilling semifinal clash in Abidjan, setting up a finals showdown.
Atiku’s message comes days after Nigeria’s Super Falcons won the 2024 WAFCON, fueling hopes of a historic double for Nigerian women’s sports.
D’Tigress, currently ranked 1st in Africa, are chasing their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title – a feat no other team has achieved. Their dominance has drawn comparisons to Nigeria’s golden generation of female athletes across football and athletics.
