Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress and some of its state governors of allegedly engaging in the diversion of public funds for political purposes ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising concerns over what he described as a coordinated misuse of state resources under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released through his media aide Paul Ibe, Atiku alleged that funds meant for governance and public development were being redirected into what he referred to as “dedicated accounts” linked to the president’s re-election campaign and party political activities, including financing internal party processes and election preparations.
He further claimed that the alleged financial practices were contributing to worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening poverty across the country, arguing that citizens were bearing the consequences of what he described as the mismanagement and politicisation of national resources.
Atiku also referenced reported tensions within the APC Governors’ Forum, suggesting that disagreements among governors over the handling and distribution of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds were connected to disputes around access to and control of resources allegedly tied to political spending, a situation he said reflects deeper internal contradictions within the ruling party.
While the allegations have generated political reactions and renewed debate over public finance accountability in Nigeria, the APC and the federal government have not issued an official response to the specific claims at the time of this report, leaving the accusations as part of an ongoing political exchange between opposition figures and the ruling establishment as the 2027 election cycle gradually takes shape.
