The Nigerian Army has intensified its offensive against separatist-linked armed groups in the South-East, recording major gains as troops overran key strongholds and recovered explosives and ransom proceeds in coordinated operations across Enugu State.
Under Operation EASTERN SANITY, troops launched sustained assaults on hideouts linked to IPOB/ESN elements, forcing fighters into retreat and significantly weakening their operational capacity. Military authorities said the pressure from ground forces, supported by intelligence and air assets, has continued to expose cracks within the group’s structure.
On April 14, 2026, troops of Sector 1, backed by the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, carried out a precision strike in the Ajali Forest area of Ezeagu Local Government Area. The operation led to the displacement of armed elements, who fled under pressure, abandoning critical materials including an anti-tank improvised explosive device.
The explosive device, believed to have been intended for deployment, was safely recovered and neutralised by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, preventing potential casualties among both troops and civilians.
Following the assault, troops established control over the area and commenced aggressive clearance operations, destroying camps, hideouts, and logistical bases. Military engineers deployed heavy equipment, including bulldozers and chainsaws, to dismantle the infrastructure that had provided cover for the armed groups.
In a related development, troops of the 82 Division Garrison operating in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, carried out an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper linked to ransom activities.
Acting on credible intelligence provided by the Department of State Services, the troops tracked and intercepted funds believed to be proceeds of kidnapping. A search of the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of a pump-action rifle and the sum of ₦2 million in cash.
Military authorities said the suspect and recovered items have been handed over to relevant agencies for further investigation, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network.
The Army noted that the latest operations have not only disrupted the operational structure of IPOB/ESN elements but also weakened their financial base, which is sustained largely through criminal activities such as kidnapping.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Army stated that it remains resolute in eliminating all insurgent and criminal threats, stressing that no safe haven will be allowed for such elements.
Residents across the South-East have also been urged to continue supporting security operations by providing timely and credible information, as the military intensifies efforts to restore lasting peace and stability in the region.
