In a move clearly meant to downplay rumours of his being ill and hospitalised in London, Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has released a photograph showing he attended a birthday party in the UK yesterday.
There were unverified claims on Thursday that Akpabio, who had been away from Nigeria to attend a parliamentary meeting in Geneva, took a detour to London due to an alleged health crisis.

He was reportedly hospitalised, though his office immediately tagged the news as “fake.”
The former governor of Akwa Ibom State was quoted as saying, “I am not sick. I am hale and hearty.”
On Friday, in apparent bid to further downplay the issue, Akpabio released a photograph as proof that he was so fit that he even attended the birthday party of the wife of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, the lawmaker representing Cross River-South in the Senate.
Spear News observes that this is not the first time Akpabio, a former Minister of Nigeria Delta Affairs, will be in the news over his health.
Earlier in the year, he was reported to have collapsed after attending a session at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja.
While in that incident, Akpabio didn’t fully deny, he simply said that he experienced a momentary loss of concentration.
Spear News reports that in the last three months, Akpabio, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Minority Leader of the Senate before he defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has been limping, walking sluggishly with the aid of a stick.
The cause of his resorting to using a walking stick remains officially undisclosed.
