Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed ongoing negotiations to join a major opposition coalition for the 2027 elections.
However, he set a firm condition: he must be on the presidential ticket.
Speaking in Hausa at his Kano residence on Saturday, the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) addressed supporters and confirmed the high level talks, directly corroborating an exclusive report by Spear News.
“At the national level, talks are ongoing to join an opposition coalition. However, I have made it categorically clear that I will only join a coalition that considers me as either the presidential or vice-presidential candidate”, Kwankwaso stated.
This declaration confirmed a delicate political arrangement previously reported by Spear News. According to the outlet’s earlier exclusive, secret negotiations had been underway involving Mr. Kwankwaso, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi. The reported plan involved a complex power-sharing deal under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The scheme, as reported by Spear News, proposed that Atiku would step aside for Peter Obi to run as the presidential candidate, with Kwankwaso as his running mate. In return, Obi would purportedly serve only a single four-year term, paving the way for power to “return” to the North with Atiku as the candidate in 2031. Sources privy to the negotiations told Spear News the deal had been “sealed.”
His move, therefore, may not be a surprise in terms of entering a coalition.
