The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been gripped by an escalating off-pitch controversy, as a series of formal complaints over match officials has forced the Confederation of African Football (CAF) into a last-minute referee reshuffle, sparking accusations of gamesmanship and deepening tensions.
The drama began ahead of the high-stakes Round of 8 clash between Morocco and Cameroon. CAF’s initial appointment of Egyptian referee Amin Omar was met with an immediate and formal protest from the Moroccan Football Federation. Morocco argued that an official from a North African rival nation presented a conflict of interest. CAF acquiesced, replacing Omar with Mauritanian official Dahane Beida.
However, the solution promptly created a new problem. The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) swiftly lodged its own appeal, objecting to the newly assigned Mauritanian referee. The reasons behind Cameroon’s protest were not formally detailed, but the move ignited a tit-for-tat cycle.
The chain reaction continued moments later. The Egyptian Football Association, reportedly in response to the initial incident, submitted a formal request for the removal of Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed from their crucial upcoming match against the Ivory Coast. This action solidified a pattern of mutual suspicion, turning referee selection into a strategic battleground.
As of press time, CAF is scrambling to find acceptable officials for both high-profile knockout matches. The unprecedented situation has cast a shadow over the tournament, shifting focus from the football on the pitch to a diplomatic skirmish off it.
CAF has yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter, but the governing body is now under intense pressure to finalize referee assignments that all parties will accept, while also defending its appointment process. With knockout matches looming, the hope is that the drama remains confined to the boardroom, allowing the players to finally reclaim the spotlight.
