As part of preparations ahead of 2027, the African Democratic Congress has inaugurated its new national secretariat in Abuja, a building that formerly served as the presidential campaign headquarters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The unveiling on Monday solidified the ADC’s physical presence in the nation’s capital, though notable opposition figures the party has been courtingโincluding Atiku himself and Labour Party’s Peter Obiโwere absent from the event.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, directly addressed the significance of the location, stating: โAtiku used to be the tenant of this building, which he used for his presidential campaign. But his tenancy has lapsed. The African Democratic Congress is now the tenant of this building.โ
He sought to downplay speculation about broader political implications, emphasizing that โThis is not an indication of anything. It has nothing to do with our movement. This is solely an ADC decision.โ
The event highlighted the party’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a cohesive force ahead of the 2027 elections. Abdullahi reiterated the ADC’s commitment to fairness and internal cohesion under the chairmanship of former Senate President David Mark, contrasting this with the โinjustice and lack of fairnessโ he identified in other parties.
Abdullahi also provided updates on key figures being courted by the ADC coalition, noting that former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and Peter Obi had been given until after the recent Anambra election to clarify their positions.
โNow, the election is done, so we expect that everybody will now come back together fully,โ he said, acknowledging the ADC’s push for all coalition affiliates to formally register with the partyโa directive that has reportedly met with some resistance.
Speaking at the unveiling, National Chairman David Mark described the new headquarters as โa physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation,โ characterizing the ADC coalition as โa historic child of necessity inspired by peopleโs desire for good governance.โ
Mark outlined the strategic function of the office, stating it would serve as โthe operational nerve centre for shaping strategies, refining ideas and grooming future leadersโ from which the party would โchampion policies that will uplift communities, strengthen institutions, and safeguard the democratic foundations upon which our republic stands.โ
