The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for holding its national executive committee (NEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja, describing the presidential villa as “a public institution, funded by the Nigerian people, not a party office or private residence.”
On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu presided over the APC’s NEC meeting at the Banquet Hall of the State House, where Nentawe Yilwatda, the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, was appointed as the party’s new national chairman.
Reacting to the development, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s interim national publicity secretary, said the ruling party’s decision to host its meeting at the seat of government “is an aberration that underlines how far this government has strayed from the foundational norms of democratic accountability.”
The opposition party also expressed hope that Yilwatda’s leadership would bring “a shift in tone, temperament, and trajectory for a party that has too often equated governance with propaganda, and power with impunity.”
This is not the first time the APC has held its NEC meeting in Aso Rock. In 2020, the ruling party convened a similar gathering at the presidential villa.
