The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State Council, has expressed deep shock and sorrow over a tragic road accident involving members of the Correspondents’ Chapel and other journalists in the state.
The accident occurred on Friday along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area while the journalists were on official assignment covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
Thirteen journalists reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately rushed to the Yelwan Duguri Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the Bauchi General Hospital for further medical care.
In a statement signed by Rashida Yusuf, Chairperson, NAWOJ, Bauchi State Council, NAWOJ stands in solidarity with the media community and the affected journalists during this difficult moment.
The association offers heartfelt prayers for the speedy recovery of all injured colleagues and commends His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, for his compassionate intervention in taking responsibility for the medical bills of the victims.
The association also applauds the prompt response of medical personnel and government officials who ensured the swift evacuation and treatment of the injured journalists.
This unfortunate incident highlights the risks journalists face in the course of their professional duties. NAWOJ therefore calls on all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the safety, welfare, and protection of media practitioners, particularly during official assignments.
While praying for the full recovery of the victims, NAWOJ equally seeks divine guidance and protection for all journalists as they continue to serve society.
