The Labour Party faction loyal to the Abure-led National Working Committee has issued a strong warning to Senator Nenadi Usman, cautioning her against attempting to dissolve legitimately elected state executives across the country.
In a statement released on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” any move by the Usman-led Caretaker Committee to sack existing Ward, Local Government, and State executives and replace them with handpicked interim officers.
The warning follows a recent advisory by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which reminded the Usman faction that it lacks the powers to dissolve elected party organs without complying with statutory notices and the party’s constitution.
Ifoh noted that INEC was emphatic in its response, stating that “the dissolution of State, Local Government and Ward Executives of your Party in all the 36 States and FCT by the National Executive Council (NEC) without giving the Statutory Notice of the meeting to the Commission and without the authority to act in your Party Constitution cannot be acceded to.”
He questioned which part of INEC’s advice the Usman faction failed to understand, adding that political party management was not a “tea party” or a “proxy assignment.”
“It is not enough to rush to the court and allegedly procure judgement, but what you do with the judgement is what matters. A higher court is already looking at the injustice meted out at the party leadership and hopefully, a ‘Daniel’ will soon come to judgment and correct the injustice”, Ifoh said.
The Abure faction urged genuine Labour Party members to ignore what it described as the “antics of usurpers,” expressing confidence that the party would soon be reclaimed ahead of the 2027 general elections.
