Rivers state police operatives have arrested Mr. Tonye Garick Tom-George , a House of Assembly aspirant under the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) for allegedly attempting to bribe the party’s state screening committee.
Also, out of 98 aspirants scheduled for the screening exercise, only 33 aspirants were cleared while 65 others were uncleared.This disclosure was made public in a report signed by Rt. Hon. Muraina Ajibola, chairman of the screening committee, sighted by Spear News in Abuja.
The report stated, ” Mr Tonye Garick Tom-George, an aspirant for the Asari Toru 1, seat, approached the committee and handed over an envelope containing money together with his passport photography in an apparent attempt to improperly influence the screening process.
The incident was reported to the police ” the reported affirmed.Meanwhile, the screening committee did not specify the exact amount of money the arrested aspirant offered to them.
Besides, the screening committee disqualified the nomination and endorsement of some aspirants by members who are financially ineligible in compliance with the provision of article 9:3 of the party’s constitution which prohibits members who are not financially up-to-date to either nominate or endorse members running for elective positions.
Spear News, however, gathered that the screening exercise which took place at the state party’s secretariat located at 268b, Aba road portHarcourt, the city capital conducted on Saturday May 8, and Sunday May 9 respectively was hitch-free , credible and transparent.
But as at the time of filing this report, the Police PPRO, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo did not pick calls to react on the progress of the said arrest.
