The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a firm dismissal of widespread media reports suggesting plans to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party described the growing speculation as “purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless.”
The statement comes amid increasing media frenzy, which recently escalated with the naming of specific individuals allegedly being considered to take Shettima’s place on the party’s future ticket.
“Our Party states in categorical terms that the stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” Morka declared.
The APC used the opportunity to chastise media organizations, urging them to “refrain from lending their platforms to rumour-peddlers and mischievous ‘news sources’ of questionable provenance whose only intention is to promote discord and confusion in the polity.”
Emphasising the current legal restrictions on political activities, the party reaffirmed its singular focus on governance. It stated that its energy remains dedicated to supporting the Tinubu-Shettima administration in delivering its “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“The ban on political activities remains in force. At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and entrenching its bold reforms,” the statement read.
A direct call was also made to the party’s own members serving in government. The APC leadership advised ministers and senior officials to avoid “wittingly or unwittingly, stoking needless speculations,” and to concentrate on their primary duties of service.
The party framed the speculation as a distraction from the government’s ongoing efforts to transform the economy and improve living conditions, urging a unified front behind President Tinubu, whom it described as the nation’s “inimitable and visionary leader.”
