The National Association of Women Journalists, Bauchi State chapter, has organised a one-day sensitisation programme aimed at strengthening women’s participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The programme, held in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission, Bauchi State office, and the League of Women Voters in Nigeria (NILOWV), focused on voter education, Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration, and the ongoing voter register display exercise.
Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Bauchi State, Hajia Rashida Yusuf, said the initiative was designed to empower women with the right information to actively engage in elections and encourage others within their communities to do the same.
She emphasized the importance of staying informed about INEC activities, particularly the continuous display and updating of the voter register, urging women to take advantage of opportunities to register, correct their details, and ensure they are fully prepared to vote.
In her remarks, the Bauchi State Chairperson of NILOWV, Hajia Zainab Mohammed, noted that the group had intensified advocacy efforts to improve women’s inclusion in governance and politics.
She said the organisation had expanded its outreach through community engagement and radio programmes to ensure women understand the importance of active political participation.
“We want women not only to vote but also to be voted for.
Women must take their rightful place in the political space, regardless of party affiliation,” she said.
Also speaking, the Gender Desk Officer of INEC in Bauchi State, Naomi Yusuf, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to promoting inclusive participation of women at all levels of the electoral process.
She stressed that meaningful representation begins at the grassroots, particularly at polling unit levels, where electoral decisions are made.
Naomi Yusuf also described the media as a key partner in voter sensitisation, noting that most electoral information reaches citizens through journalists and media platforms.
She confirmed that INEC has continued voter registration and PVC update exercises across Bauchi State, encouraging eligible voters to participate actively.
