Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (APC) is said to have embarked on a high-stake political consultations to consider former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his possible running mate ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Top insiders of the coalition party privy to the ongoing consultations disclosed that discussions between loyalists of both political heavyweights have intensified in recent weeks, fueling speculation of a strategic North-South alliance aimed at strengthening opposition chances in the next general election.
Meanwhile, either camp has not issued any official confirmations yet, sources within the coalition talks cite Amaechi’s political structure, influence in the South-South region, and experience at the federal level are factors on the front burner.
A close source to Amaech who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Amaechi remains one of the strongest political forces from the South-South. His experience and grassroots appeal make him a valuable option in any coalition arrangement.”
But reliable sources said such a joint ticket could reshape opposition politics and political realignments come 2027.
But trusted allies to the two ADC heavyweights, insist that strategic discussions remain at a preliminary stage as no final decision has been reached.
Spear News Nigeria gathered that the need for the duo to politically work together becomes exigent amid growing political calculations by opposition leaders to build a formidable coalition capable to wrest power from the ruling party come 2027.
