A devastating accident on the Keffi-Abuja highway this evening has left at least eight people dead and several others critically injured after a Dangote cement truck lost control and plowed into multiple vehicles stuck in traffic.
Our reporter who is at the scene reports that the truck, which was also carrying compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders, suffered brake failure, leading to a collision that triggered a gas explosion.
The impact caused chaos on the busy highway, with debris scattered across the scene and a massive gridlock leaving motorists and commuters stranded for hours.
Emergency response teams, including the fire service, police, and road safety officials, swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. A section of the road has been cordoned off to prevent further accidents and allow rescue operations to proceed.
A fire service official at the scene confirmed the grim toll, stating, “So far, we have recovered eight bodies, and many others are severely injured. The truck’s brake failure caused it to ram into vehicles, leading to the explosion.”
Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area as cleanup and investigation efforts continue. The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and the enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards on Nigeria’s highways.
