The National Steering Committee for the Open Government Partnership (OGP) has approved the implementation of a four-year National Action Plan (NAP IV) for Nigeria.
The OGP National Coordinator, Dr. Gloria Ahmed, announced this during a retreat for stakeholders in Abuja on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the OGP is a global initiative that unites government reformers and civil society leaders.
Its objective is to develop action plans that make governments more inclusive, responsive, and accountable.
Ahmed noted that Nigeria had previously adopted a two-year cycle for the implementation of NAP III, which concluded in December 2024.
However, she explained that, following careful consideration, the National Steering Committee approved a four-year plan for NAP IV.
The National Coordinator reflected on the journey under NAP III, describing it as a valuable learning experience.
She highlighted that the innovative principles guiding OGP implementation have enabled stakeholders to collaborate effectively, harness potential, and make steady progress in achieving their goals.
Ahmed acknowledged that while NAP III may not have fully achieved all its targets, she expressed confidence that if Nigeria maintains its current level of commitment, the country will continue to make significant strides. She likened the situation to viewing the glass as half full rather than half empty.
“I want to applaud your continued efforts at advocating and facilitating reform efforts since 2016 when Nigeria joined the OGP global.
“It is commendable that the country is about to implement its fourth cycle of OGP planning which shows commitment, determination, and drive from you all.
“These efforts can clearly be seen in the numerous reform efforts the NAP III has championed and made impact, especially in the areas of beneficial ownership, citizens engagement and public financial management reforms.
Ahmed said that the objective of the retreat was to review the gains Nigeria had made under NAP III and chart a new course for NAP IV.
“The retreat holding today is one of the many co-creation initiatives that we will implement to agree on commitment areas to pursue under NAP IV,” she said.
The Non-State Actors Co-Chair, Mrs. Obialunanma Nnaobi-Ayodele, said that the national action plan would meet the needs and aspirations of all Nigerian
She said that the four-year action plan had some caveat to review the plan after two years, adding that the caveat was to check the success of the plan
“Whatever we come out of this workshop with, will go to the public. This will determine what needs to be elaborated on and what will be modified.
“Please bring out your A-games, technical expertise and experience; that is all we need in the room right now,” Nnaobi-Ayodele said.
