Mongolia Prime Minister, Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene, has resigned after protests rocked the country over his son’s ostentatious lifestyle.
Weeks of protests and calls for investigation into the source of income of the Oyun-Erdenes compelled the lawmakers to pass a vote of no confidence on Monday.
Though Mr Oyun-Erdene denied any wrongdoing, he resigned from his office on Tuesday after he lost a vote of confidence.
“It was an honour to serve my country and people in times of difficulties, including pandemics, wars, and tariffs,” Mr Oyun-Erdene said after the vote of confidence in which he could not poll the required number to remain PM.
Viral photos of Mr Oyun-Erdene’s 23-year old son and his girlfriend flaunting luxury black Dior shoulder bag and other expensive items they bought sparked protests in Mongolia.
For two week, young Mongolians daily hit the streets in protests, some converging on Ulaanbaatar’s central Sükhbaatar Square and opposite the Government Palace, over Mr Oyun-Erdene son’s lavish lifestyle, calling for the PM ‘s resignation.
