Senator Magnus Abe has emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has no choice but to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling, drawing parallels to past judicial decisions that altered electoral outcomes.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News Prime Time on Monday, which was monitored by Spear News, Abe referenced the case of David Lyon, who was voted to be governor of Bayelsa State but was stripped of his victory by a Supreme Court ruling a day before his swearing-in.
Abe stated, “David Lyon was voted to be governor of Bayelsa State, but the Supreme Court gave a ruling that gave victory to the man he defeated at the polls a day before his swearing-in. Nobody hailed him for obeying the judgment because, in reality, he did not have a choice.”
The senator further stressed that obedience to the Supreme Court’s decisions is not optional but mandatory.
“You do not need to commend someone for obeying the judgment of the Supreme Court because whether they like the judgment or not, they must obey it; they do not have a choice. When the Supreme Court speaks, that is the Federal Republic of Nigeria speaking,” he asserted.
Abe also warned against misleading advice, noting that failure to recognize the binding nature of judicial rulings could lead to political missteps.
“When people begin to make you believe that you have an option when you do not have any, then you are not properly advised, and you are bound to fail,” he cautioned.
