The Nigeria Police Force has rescued twelve (12) trafficked children and arrested two suspects operating an illegal orphanage in Abia State.
In a coordinated operation based on credible intelligence, police operatives raided a residential apartment on Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, where a couple, Blessing Emebo, 49, and Sunday Emebo, 42, allegedly ran an unregistered motherless babies’ home.
The children, aged between six months and fourteen years, were discovered in the facility and were believed to have been sourced from villages in Arochukwu.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Monday 2nd May, confirmed that the rescued minors have been handed over to the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs for care and rehabilitation. The suspects are undergoing interrogation and will face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations.
The rescue comes as the police also intercepted a cache of illegal arms in Kogi State. Officers chased down a suspicious Sharon bus that fled a checkpoint, recovering five (5) AK-47 rifles, magazines, and over 340 rounds of ammunition. Authorities suspect the weapons may be linked to a recent armed robbery in Kabba.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun commended the operations, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks, including human trafficking rings and illegal arms syndicates.
