Borussia Dortmund produced a thrilling 3–1 victory over Barcelona in their Champions League knockout stage second-leg clash on Tuesday night, but it was not enough to overturn the first-leg deficit as the Spanish side advanced 5–3 on aggregate.
Serhou Guirassy was the standout performer, scoring a hat-trick to give Dortmund hope in front of their home fans.
He opened the scoring in the 11th minute from the penalty spot after a foul inside the box.
Dortmund continued to press and was rewarded again early in the second half when Guirassy doubled the lead in the 49th minute with a well-placed finish following an assist from Ramy Bensebaini.
However, Bensebaini was involved at the other end just five minutes later when he inadvertently put the ball into his own net in the 54th minute, giving Barcelona a crucial away goal and easing the pressure on the visitors.
Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha received a yellow card shortly after in the 56th minute as tempers flared.
Guirassy completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute to restore Dortmund’s two-goal lead on the night, but Barcelona held on to their aggregate advantage to secure progression to the next round.
Despite the win, Dortmund exited the competition with a 5–3 loss on aggregate, while Barcelona moved on, having done enough in the first leg to withstand the late surge from the German side.
