Over 40 houses were destroyed and many residents rendered homeless in Arokho, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, following a rainstorm that occurred on Monday night.
Also affected were churches, shops, and electricity transmission poles. As a result, many of the displaced residents are currently taking refuge with neighbours.
According to some of the affected residents, several buildings collapsed after the storm ripped off their roofs.
The community has since been plunged into darkness due to the damaged electricity poles, and socio-economic activities have been severely disrupted.
Speaking with newsmen, a community leader, Mr. Joseph Orokhan, appealed to both the local and state governments for assistance in rebuilding the damaged structures. He said life has become increasingly difficult for those affected.
“The people are in a state of confusion since the calamity befell us,” he said. “We are calling on the authorities of Owan East Local Government, the Edo State Government, and well-meaning individuals and agencies to come to our aid.
“The rainstorm has inflicted colossal damage on individuals, families, and businesses. We need government support to help our people return to normal life,” he pleaded.
