While many of his contemporaries have fallen into the ‘old school’ category, Richard Mofe-Damijo took a different path. RMD has consistently reinvented himself from one generation to the next.
The heartthrob made his breakthrough when he starred in the Nigerian TV series ‘Checkmate’ in the late 1980s. Since then, RMD has appeared in over 100 cinematographic projects, from stageplay to screen. After decades of acting, the 63-year-old is now exploring new creative territory by producing his first-ever film titled, ‘Radio Voice’. OLAITAN GANIU was at the movie premiere in Lagos.

The phrase “better late than never” perfectly captures RMD’s new role in the creative sector. Throughout the years, he has spent considerable time in front of cameras, reading and rehearsing scripts to bring characters to life. However, his desire to venture into film production has always remained strong.

“For years, I’ve had the privilege of bringing powerful stories to life in front of the camera. But when it is time, it’s time. The important thing is that we are here and the film is here. They (filmophile) will see it, they’ll love it. They will know that the human spirit can triumph over any kind of adversity. They will know that if they persevere, help is coming and love is around the corner.

The Delta state-born thespian was determined to tell impactful stories regardless of how long it took.

“Embracing this role as producer, I got to tell a story that had lived in me for so long. It’s new, it’s thrilling, and if I’m being honest, a little daunting, but isn’t that what makes the journey worth it?” RMD questioned.

Continuing he said, “Some stories don’t just live in your heart, they take root in your heart, waiting for the right time to be told. ‘Radio Voice’ is one of those stories. It is different and personal.”

Sourcing and casting the right actors for a film can be challenging, but this don surely knows the perfect talents suitable for each role. The incredible cast includes the veteran actor himself featuring Nancy Isime, Nse Ikpe–Etim, Deyemi Okanlawon, Timini Egbuson, Adedamola Adewale, Blessing Jessica Obasi, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Jasmine Lelah, Oprah Okereke, Kelechi Benwosely Kachikwu, and Oprah Okereke.

“Finding the right talent is never easy, but that’s what made the process so rewarding. I knew I had to go for the best, and I’m proud to say that’s exactly what I did. The result is a cast that truly brings the story to life.

“Yes, it was fun working with all these amazing and talented people. I’m feeling enchanted and elated as ‘Radio Voice’ made its way into the world. It is a project close to my heart,” he enthused.

Directed by Isioma Osaje, the drama is currently running in cinemas across the country. Since April 11, it has been generating positive reviews. As part of his mission to showcase African stories on a global stage, the film is scheduled to premiere at ODEON Cinemas, United Kingdom on May 23.

The movie follows a sex worker, a widower and the staff of a has-been Radio station collide in this riveting tale of second chances and redemption. “It is about the challenges of radio workers as they go through various bullying and having to succeed against all odds. It is a triumph of the human spirit over adversity. That sums it all,” RMD said.

As a Nollywood icon, RMD often attributes his success to his dedication and understanding of both the past and future of African culture. His commitment to the craft has been the foundation of his journey.

He strongly believes that true growth lies in the willingness to engage in continuous learning and evolving is key to remaining relevant in the ever-changing landscape of Nollywood. “Committing myself fully to the work has allowed me to stay relevant and maintain a deep connection with audiences over the years,” he said.

Considering the unique experiences and challenges faced by women’s folk of different backgrounds and communities, the versatile performer said the project is way of paying homage to womanhood, saying that: “I was raised by a strong woman, grew up surrounded by women, and have loved and lost remarkable women far too soon. Beyond that, I’ve been inspired by the incredible young women making waves in Nollywood, and I felt it was time to shine a spotlight on their talent and contributions.”

Born in Aladja, a community in the Udu Kingdom of Delta State, located in the South-South region of Nigeria. He attended Midwest College in Warri and later went to Anglican Grammar School, where he actively participated in the Drama Club. He continued his education by studying Theatre Arts at the University of Benin. In 1997, he returned to school to enroll at the University of Lagos, where he studied law and graduated in 2004.

As an actor, he has received various awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2016, In 2024, he was honoured with the Industry Merit Awards at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, and he also earned the Best Actor in a Leading Role at Africa Movie Academy Award in 2005 among several accolades.
