The Labour Party (LP) convened its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, amidst ongoing tensions following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the party’s national chairmanship.
Held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, the meeting was presided over by former Finance Minister Senator Nenadi Usman. Notable attendees included the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
Also present were former LP governorship candidates Athan Achonu (Imo) and Olumide Akpata (Edo).
In her opening address, Usman, who chairs the party’s National Caretaker Committee, announced that the LP would review its recent Anambra State governorship primaries and communicate its stance soon.
The primaries, conducted in Awka last Saturday, saw ex-National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) MD Chief George Moughalu emerge as the party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, governorship election. These were the final primaries overseen by the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC).
This comes days after the Supreme Court nullified an Appeal Court ruling that had affirmed Abure as LP National Chairman. A five-member panel unanimously held that the lower court lacked jurisdiction, as the dispute involved the party’s internal affairs. The apex court also noted that Abure’s tenure had already expired.
